Van Tellingen BEAR HUG Salt an Pepper Shakers One of the outstanding lines made by Regal China Company of Antioch, Illinois, was the Van Tellingen Bear Hug Salt and pepper Shakers. Designed by Ruth Van Tellingen Bendel (d Mar 1986), in the late 1940s and put into production in 1947.
Mrs Bendel was known world wide as a very talented illustrator of childrens books.
The earliest sets were impressed "Van Tellingen, Patent Pending" which this set is. All sets after July 17, 1951 are marked with the name and patent number
When Mrs Bendel designed these shakers, she invented new features to help the consumer. Besides fitting together in a hugging position, few people realize that they are designed in such a way that both can be picked up at the same time with one hand, and the salt and pepper dispensed without fear of dropping them.
